Growing up as a boy in Batesville, Arkansas, J. Cameron Barnett was always the performer in his family. Piano at age six, voice lessons at ten, saxophone at eleven, tap dance lessons at fourteen…. “Everyone was so excited that I moved to NYC,” he recalls today, “because they thought I would someday be on a float in the White River Day Parade, which comes right down Main Street.”
As he recounted in his laugh-out-loud, autobiographical cabaret, Mama Told Me Not To Come, Barnett packed his belongings and, Mama in tow, headed to NYC in the summer of 1994 to chase his dream. “I pulled a flyer off a bulletin board at my high school for this drama school, and thought, ‘This is what I want to do.’ I knew this was my modern day Fame, with kids dancing on the tables in the cafeteria.”
Barnett’s flyer was for The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA). Although he quickly learned there was no dancing in the chow line, after graduation in 1995, he did land his first professional job: touring more than 20 countries in a revival of the musical Hair, directed by one of the show’s original creators, James Rado.
Barnett is also an interior designer having formed Cameron Barnett Home in 2006. He has several installations in the world famous Carlyle Hotel in NYC’s Upper East Side. Some guests have included The Duke of York, Kate Moss, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer “The Roger Federer Suite.” He has been published as a designer in The Carlyle by Nick Foulkes, published by Assouline. Barnett is also owner/operator of The Self Tape Space which is a studio dedicated to recording actors for self tape auditions.
